Such was the case with the 1968 Dodge Charger, with the car exploding onto the scene when its performance and popularity were cemented in movie Bullit. This propelled the 1968 Charger to immediate success; however it is important to note that this was the second model of the infamous car developed by Dodge. What happened was the Charger was originally created in 1966 with it originally being designed as an alternative for the muscle car craze that was gripping the nation. The first version featured a V - 8, with an electric shaver grill borrowed from the 1942 De Soto and the inside dashboard panel involved the use of actual bulbs to illuminate the gages. However, the car had some initial problems such it would lift when taking corners in excess of 150 miles per hour. This forced Dodge to impose dealer modifications to the 1966 and 1967 models. The truth is that there are a lot of tools that will be needed during a car restoration.
 In this article I will not be talking about how to set up a shop,
 but rather the tools that you need to restore your car at home.
We all know that this is a big job, so get ready to get down and dirty.
The very first suggestion that I will make, is that you absolutely must have a garage
to do the work in. It doesn't need to be a huge outrageous garage, just a place where
you can leave your car for a while that will keep it out of the weather, this will not be a fast process.
The garage that you work from also needs to have power, this is also a must. You can't possibly
do all of the work with hand tools. There are a few tools that I will suggest that you could
 live without if you have to, but most of them will be a must.
It would also be a nice idea to have heat in your garage, this will make it more comfortable to
do your work. Below I will add a list of the tools you will need to restore your classic car.
This list may not cover all of the tools, but it will cover most of the ones that are a must.
Let me also give a warning here, it you are one of those people who think that everything has
to have a time limit, and that time limit must push you to move the job along quickly, this my
not be that much fun for you, it will take a lot of time.
List Of The Tools That You Need To Do A Car Restoration
1. This is a must have, you will need an air compressor that can handle the work load that you
will through at it.
2. You will need a full set of wrenches, both metrics and SAE.
3. You will need a ratchet, and a full set of sockets.
4. You will need a full set of screwdrivers.
5. You will need a 5" air grinder.
6. You will need a 1/2" and a 3/8" breaker bar, and sockets to use with them.
7. You will need a full set of pry bars.
8. You will need air lines to connect your tools to the air.
9. Optional it is always nice to have a drop light when you need it.
10. You will need paint guns to spray the primer with, I do not suggest low
dollar spray gun, get about a mid range brand name gun.
11. You will need air files for shaping the body filler that you will be using.
12. You will also need long hand file boards, the shaping is always better when it's done by hand.
13. You will need body hammers and dollies to take out dents with.
14. Optional you should have a uni-spotter nail welder to pull dents also, a good brand to look at is stinger.
15. You will need a die grinder, this is an absolute must if you have rust, or dents that
 require you to cut out the area to fix the problem.
16. You will need a mig welder, this is another piece of equipment that is not an option,
it is a must. Do not by a no name welder either.
This may not be all of the tools that you will need, but it should get you well on your way
to getting the job done in an efficient manor. You should not have to look for tools every
 time you turn around if you have these basic tools.
The other thing that I always harp on is safety, you should always do you work with another
 friend around so in case something happens during the process and you need help.
The key idea here is to have fun, and do the job in a safe manor.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines muscle cars as, "any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving."
Although opinions vary, it is often cited that the 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 is the first muscle car ever created. It was designed with speed and power in mind, using a powerful engine with a lightweight body.
By the mid-1970s some of this market converged into personal luxury performance cars, thus beginning an era where personal luxury trumped lightweight speed.
Performance-type cars began to make a return in the United States during the 1980s, however with new regulations governing safety and pollution combined with increased production costs, these new vehicles were not designed to the formula of the traditional low-cost muscle cars. Introducing electronic fuel injection and overdrive transmission to the remaining muscle car survivors like the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird helped sustain a market share for them alongside personal luxury coupes with performance packages.

Why the 1970 Buick GSX Was a Rockstar

 

The Buick GSX began as an option package on the Buick Skylark in 1965 with probably the biggest and best of the Buick GSX produced in 1970. 1970 was the year that General Motors lifted the corporate ban on making engines larger than 400 cubic inches. Buick immediately went to market with with a 455 cubic inch engine that it put into its Buick GS or Gran Sport.
Before 1970, the GSX did not sell very well for Buick. This was primarily because Buicks were considered an old man's car, old fashioned, sturdy, but not very fun to drive. Things changed when the company replaced the nail-head V8 with the bigger 400 cubic inch and bigger, engines. In the years leading up to 1970 Buick restyled the Skylark GS400 in an effort to make it resemble the Pontiac GTO and Olds 4-4-2, whose sales were through the roof for their manufacturers. Even the Chevelle sold better than Skylarks, at this point in time.
Sales of the 1970 Buick GS took off, albeit very slowly, when the company installed a 450hp, 455 V8 under the hood. That 455 put out 510 foot pounds of torque at 2800rpm. This option meant the car could travel a quarter mile in under 13 seconds at 105mph. Midway through 1970, Buick released the GSX option package. It was an expensive proposition because it added a full $1000 to the price tag of the automobile. The GSX package gave the buyer a four speed transmission, Hurst shifter, 15 inch tires on mag styled wheels.
It also offered bucket seats, power front disc brakes, heavy duty cooling and control suspension. The choice of color was limited to Saturn Yellow or Apollo white with black striping. Despite all of the options, demand for the Buick GSX was still low. In fact, Buick only made 187 of the cars in white and just 768 overall. Car buyers preferred the Pontiac GTO over the Buick GSX buying 3797 GTOs compared to just 124 Buick GSX the same year and only then after Buick drastically dropped the price on the special option package.
In an effort to boost sagging sales Buick licensed The Door's song "Light My Fire" for the advertising campaign theme. However, the ad campaign didn't work. Buick did bring back the GSX option package the following year in 1971, but with no better results than before.

1970 Pontiac Firebird - A New Beginning


Pontiac's second-generation ponycar was a little late for the party in 1970, but it was worth the wait! The 1970 Firebird was a completely new design from the ground up, not sharing any major suspension or body components with the previous model. The car was praised by the car magazines for its bold new styling, sports-car like handling, and excellent acceleration abilities when equipped with the right engine. It had been improved immensely over the first generation cars in almost every way.
The 1970 Pontiac Firebird rode on a 108" wheelbase, the same as the new Camaro. It was only available as a two door coupe; the convertible had been dropped from the lineup, and would not return as a factory option until 24 years later. The 70 Firebird came with bucket seats, front disc brakes, and a front stabilizer bar. There were four trim levels available: the base Firebird, the Esprit, the Formula, and the Trans Am.
The base car came with a 250 CID inline six cylinder engine and a three-speed manual transmission, but a 255 horsepower Pontiac 350 V8 and an automatic transmission were available options. The Esprit came standard with the same 350 V8 and three speed manual transmission, and an optional automatic transmission was also available. It had stiffer spring rates than the base car. The 1970 Firebird Formula can be easily identified by the dual forward-facing hood scoops, and it came with a 330 horsepower Pontiac 400 V8 (NOW we're talking!) and a three speed manual transmission. A four speed manual or an automatic transmission were available options. The Formula came with the same springs as the base car, but with heavier duty shocks, a larger diameter front stabilizer bar, and a rear stabilizer bar. It could also be special ordered with the same suspension as the Trans Am, and you could even get a Ram Air III (also called Ram Air HO) 335 HP 400 V8 in it.
The 1970 Trans Am was all about performance. It came with the Ram Air III engine above, but an optional Ram Air IV engine was available that produced 345 (370 according to some sources) horsepower. The base transmission in the Trans Am was a wide ratio Muncie four speed with a Hurst shifter. It came with 15" wheels, larger front and rear stabilizer bars than the Formula, the stiffer springs from the Esprit, and the heavier-duty shocks from the Formula. The 1970 Trans Am also had a shaker hood, which means that there was a rear-facing air intake scoop mounted atop the carburetor, and that scoop protruded through an opening in the hood to draw fresh, cool air into the engine. It had front and rear spoilers, and air extractors on both front fenders to allow hot air to escape from the engine compartment. The 70 Trans Am was only available in two color schemes, either white with blue stripes or blue with white stripes.
There were a total of 48,739 Pontiac Firebirds produced in 1970, including only 7,708 Formulas and 3,196 Trans Ams. The Formulas and Trans Ams were excellent performers due to the 400 cubic inch engine, with 0-60 MPH times in the six second range. When you combine the improved handling characteristics of the new platform with the power of the Pontiac 400 engine, the 1970 Pontiac Firebird was one of the best all around musclecars of the era. It is one of my favorite cars of all time.

Sold at an affordable price, muscle cars are intended for mainly street use and occasional drag racing.[3][4][5][6] They are distinct from two-seat sports cars and expensive 2+2 GTs intended for high-speed touring and road racing. Developed simultaneously in their own markets, muscle cars also emerged from manufacturers in Australia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere.

1965 AC Cobra VS 1955 Corvette



The formula for this monster of a car. Get the lightest frame you can and ad the biggest moter that would fit. That's how the Ac Cobra came into being. Back in in 1962 - 1967. The Cobra revolutionized racing power.Going speeds of more then 160 mph. it soon got the reputation of being the sports car of the 1960s.

Well known driver Carrol Shelby used Britsh styling with American ingenuity he added some more refinements to create what we have today. this beast had the look Shelby wanted. A cramped open cockpit that defied the elements, with a low aluminum body that would curve with the road. With a series of changes including strengthening and widening the chassis to support a 427-cubic inch Ford V8 engine. Also added huge 15 inch tires as well as bigger brakes for nicer handling.

What we ended up with was a speed machine that only race cars could beat.being smaller then its competitors it more then made up for it in every other respect.She also had beautiful side mounted exhaust pipes blowing fumes of the hottest low lying speed car on wheels. She could accelerate from 0 - 100 mph in 4 seconds. What's your answer to a beast car like this. Price of this car in 1966 was $6,200 and today will go for $250k - $500k or more.
